Why French (Language Magazine 02-17)

“Kathy Stein-Smith explains why demand is growing for French the world over.

There is one skill that is being learned around the world, with enrollments growing by 50% in Asia and Africa, while in the U.S. programs are being reduced and even eliminated. This highly sought-after global skill is not social media, data analytics, or coding; it is learning French. French is a language that reflects both the rich cultural and historical heritage of France and also that of the worldwide Francophonie. It is a language of international diplomacy, a global business language, and a top internet language, which points to the growing importance of French.”

Montreal celebrating its 375th birthday today

“Montreal is celebrating its 375th birthday.

Over the past year, the city has been hosting events to celebrate the milestone anniversary.

The festivities kick into high gear Wednesday with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Philippe Couillard meeting Mayor Denis Coderre.

Trudeau told reporters at city hall he is proud to be a Montrealer even though he was born in Ottawa.

The prime minister says his birthday wish for Montreal is another 375 years of diversity, pride and openness.

Montreal was known as Ville-Marie when it was founded on May 17, 1642.”

The Real Reason Why Spaniards Eat Late

“Many travellers believe Spain’s late mealtimes are a reflection of the country’s laidback attitude, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

While travellers might attribute Spain’s late mealtimes to the country’s laidback Mediterranean attitude, the real reason is a little more peculiar. Spaniards are living in the wrong time zone, and have been for more than 70 years.”

The Importance of Foreign Language

“I first started learning French as a first-year student in high school. My initial reasons were just because I thought it was cool, but years later, I’ve grown to value the experiences and opportunities that I’ve had from studying French.

Through studying French, I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people. This summer I hosted a French student named Andrea and it was an extremely valuable experience. I was able to gain insight into another culture that I wouldn’t have been able to without studying French.

At Western, I’m on my second year of French and I’ve found the program to be very rewarding. As someone who aspires to travel in the future, having knowledge of French language and culture will be valuable.

Foreign language at Western isn’t only about the language; it’s about the culture, too. Having a better understanding of other cultures around the globe creates more well-rounded and culturally understanding students.”

Being Fluent in Two Languages Might Literally Change How You Perceive Time

“Being bilingual already has a long list of benefits. Research suggests that it boosts creativity and memory, strengthens multitasking and slows downthe onset of dementia. But in case these benefits don’t already outweigh the monotony of memorizing grammar structures and vocabulary lists, here’s one more: Bilingualism seems to give us a more nuanced perception of time.”
