Pope’s interpreter learns job brings surprises and fans

“Monsignor Mark Miles is the linguistic bridge between the Spanish-speaking Francis and his English-speaking audiences.

If every word you say is considered by some of your listeners to be divinely inspired — maybe even infallible — what happens if you don’t speak their language?

For Pope Francis, the answer lies in the man in the glasses, the unobtrusive black-robed priest who can be seen trailing the pontiff, whispering into his ear and sometimes speaking directly into the mic.

Monsignor Mark Miles is the linguistic bridge between the Spanish-speaking Francis and his English-speaking audiences. He has accompanied the pope on other international trips and been at his side in some illustrious company, including President Obama, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Queen Elizabeth II.”

Pope Francis in the US: How He’ll Be Traveling (with his translator)

“Pope Francis doesn’t speak English as strongly as he does other languages, so his official translator for his trip to America, Monsignor Mark Miles, will remain close to the pope during his visit. German-American Day (October 6th)

German-American Day is a holiday in the United States, observed annually on October 6. The holiday, which celebrates German American heritage, commemorates the date in 1683 when 13 German families from Krefeld, near the Rhine, landed in Philadelphia. These families subsequently founded Germantown, Pennsylvania, the first German settlement in the original thirteen American colonies.”

The queen is Miles’ other leader, at least from a secular perspective: He hails from Gibraltar, the British-ruled rocky outcrop in southern Spain, which also explains why Miles speaks English and Spanish fluently.”

Victorious Catalan separatists claim mandate to break with Spain

“Separatists have won a clear majority of seats in Catalonia’s parliament, preliminary official results showed on Sunday, in an election that set the region on a collision course with Spain’s central government over independence

“Catalans have voted yes to independence,” acting Catalan regional government head Artur Mas told supporters, with secessionist parties on track to secure 72 out of 135 seats in the powerful region of 7.5 million people that includes Barcelona.

The strong pro-independence showing dealt a blow to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, three months before a national election. His center-right government, which has opposed attempts to hold a referendum on secession, has called the separatist plan ‘a nonsense’ and vowed to block it in court.”
